Evolving Tachograph Landscape: Transport Operator

With significant changes to tachograph regulations in recent times, and in the years to come, analysis provider Convey says it will be helping to educate users, new and old, about related compliance requirements.

From an historical perspective, the launch of digital tachographs in 2006 marked a pivotal moment in the UK’s approach to tachograph legislation, says the company, heralding an era of greater accuracy and effectiveness in monitoring driver compliance.

“Digital solutions meant not just reliable and tamper-resistant data, but also greater enforcement opportunities for relevant authorities and greater scope for operators to manage their drivers’ hours,” said Convey.

“The concept of smart tachographs then introduced enhanced data security and expanded data collection, which is enabling transport operators to maximise operational efficiency, although the transitional months will not be challenge-free. As the changes come into effect through 2024 and 2025, expert guidance will be required, additional costs will be incurred, and operational adjustments will have to be made.”

Transport operators and HGV drivers will need to adapt to new compliance standards, administrative tasks, and operational practices, the firm adds, and emphasises its commitment to helping operators achieve much more than the minimum compliance requirements; these are merely the foundation on which an operator can build and grow a thriving and efficient business with easy-to-use digital management tools.

“At Convey, our team is committed to helping transport operators and drivers prepare for the transitions with our ever-evolving tachograph software package,” said commercial director Karen Crispe.

“Our Tachograph module is much more than just tachograph analysis software; it also includes driver performance and training management modules, along with DVSA Earned Recognition, as part of the inclusive bundle of tools that will help transform your operation from the ground up, increasing productivity and profitability, whilst improving driver/management relationships.”

The digitalisation of tachograph data has recently intensified even further with the expansion of remote tachograph monitoring capabilities, points out Convey: while previously, enforcement authorities could access 19 areas of tachograph data in real-time, that number has now increased to 25.

While aimed at enhancing road safety, the move will put additional pressure on operators to maintain vehicle and driver compliance, the company contends, meaning expert support and guidance will be needed more than ever.

Similarly, says Convey, the forthcoming inclusion of international van operators in tachograph regulations is also causing ripples in the pond, as new industries enter the market that are totally unfamiliar with vehicle and driver compliance requirements.

Karen Crispe added: “We keep a close eye on industry developments and leverage our extensive knowledge and expertise to guide all types of operators, new and old, to becoming compliant with tachograph legislation.

“In our experience, businesses appreciate the pay-as-you-go nature of our tachograph analysis software, which means they only have to pay for the actual days driven, and there are no additional charges.

“With the pressure on costs for all operators, this helps to keep expenses down whilst still giving them access to the best possible digital software for their tachograph analysis needs. And of course, our highly experienced support team, with their well-deserved reputation for being great listeners, is always ready and willing to assist customers on their journey to stay compliant.”
