Mandatory Retrofit Capacity Fears: International Operators Must Act Now!

“Tacho Retrofitting Deadlines: Don’t Get Caught Out!” is a must-attend event for all UK international operators and registration is now open – get informed and join the debate today!

If you are an international operator, you’re no doubt aware of the many deadlines outlined in the EU Mobility Package 1 when it comes to mandatory fitting of Smart 2 (Gen2 v2) digital tachos. Whilst this series of deadlines does range over the next 2 years, we have recently been made aware of a particularly pressing issue relating to the December 2024 deadline, when all UK international operators with a non smart tachograph must have retrofitted their vehicles.

This translates to an estimated 10,000+ vehicles requiring retrofitting by the end of 2024; an unprecedented level of demand which brings into question the capacity of calibration stations to be able to cope.

Add to that the 5000+ vehicles with smart 1 tachos requiring retrofitting by August 2025, and the mandatory requirement of tachos in vehicles over 2.5T (LCV) operating internationally by July 2026, and you have the perfect storm.

Even if operators start booking in their vehicles today, it’s very likely that not all tacho upgrades will be completed by the various deadlines, and the fallout from this could be devastating.

To shed more light on this challenging situation, and to support operators in understanding how best to move forward and remain compliant, Convey’s Karen Crispe is hosting a live online webinar on 20th February at 11am with guest speakers and experts in the field – Spencer Miller (DVSA), Lauren Duclos (Stoneridge) and Andrew Wright (Skillray).

It’s worth mentioning too, that as well as calibration station capacity concerns, potential supply chain disruptions for these new tachos could present additional roadblocks for operators to navigate round. Unplanned stock shortages would be detrimental to all affected operators, especially when you consider that demand for the tachos will be Europe-wide, and Skillray (tacho suppliers) estimate that orders for these new smart tachos over the next 2 years could reach the dizzy heights of 40 million units!

If you are an international operator without your tacho upgrade plan in place yet, we urge you to join our webinar on February 20th to gain crucial insights from this panel of leading industry experts.

Convey is here to help ensure you meet the required tacho retrofit deadlines without unnecessary stress nor unplanned expenses. At this session, we will be delving deep into the different facets of the retrofitting deadlines, helping you to create your own action plan in order to remain compliant. There will be a live Q and A too after the presentation, so please bring along your questions and concerns, so that we can give you the answers you need.
