We are all aware of the dangers drink driving, but did you know that your tyres could leave road users even more vulnerable?
A study conducted by Professor Peter Wells of the Centre for Automotive Industry Research at Cardiff University and commissioned by Halfords has found that worn tyres have a greater affect on a cars stopping distance than the consumption of alcohol.
The researchers found that consuming alcohol slows reaction time by 18%, so if travelling at 70mph it would take you an additional 12.4ft to stop the car.
The difference in stopping distance between tyres with 4mm tread (in ‘good’ condition) and 1.6mm tread (worn tyres), is 36%, meaning it could potentially add 89ft to the stopping distance of the vehicle.
